Meet our coach, Coach Phil. Coach is from Kansas City, MO. and he has been featured in newspapers such as The Kansas City Star because of his skills as a basketball player. Coach Phil got his start in basketball at a young age playing for Don Bosco under the guidance of Calvin Wainwright, (whose son Ishmail Wainwright went on to play for the Phoenix Suns). Coach Phil became a varsity letterman as a sophomore which earned him a scholarship to Avila University. Coach Phil brings passion, discipline, and over 15 years of coaching experience to the court. All of the Team Grit athletes have gone on to become better players physically while also developing a higher basketball IQ. What motivated Coach Phil to start Team Grit was witnessing his own children be a part of multiple AAU organizations that didn't align with his vision of what he felt was needed to build a great athlete. He feels that the great athletes are more than just ball players and the experience should be used to shape skilled, disciplined, and mentally strong young men that go on to do whatever their heart desires. Coach has a deep understanding of the game and has dedicated his time to building strong teams. Not just shaping athletes, but outstanding individuals, inspiring excellence both on and off the court.
